Awkward Zebra Brethren

Zebra Brethren, originally uploaded by ChristineRenee.net.
Last night I’m playing records at the Standard Hollywood, and this guy walks past me and we both kind of lock eyes and are speechlessly staring at each other for a good long 10 slowed-down seconds and I finally break the silence and said, “Alright, get over here. When was the last time you met someone with a Zebra jacket? Let’s take a photo.”

Said ZB then invited me to the Burton snowboard company’s opening of their LA store as his band is playing there. I asked him what the name of his band is and turns out, its Trouble and I had a one second spot ing their last video, and we know a lot of the same people.
mostly it all comes down to one man, Craig Wetherby, who was a big part of throwing this massive opening party and so I went down to say hi.
Prince Paul was DJing. It was really bright, I got there 30 min before it ended and all the liquor had run dry, there were a ton of dorky dudes with ski hats on and they are probably amazing athletes, and some are even Olympians.
The LCD screens were showing scenes of snow covered mountains and people doing amazing things on them and I thought, “Wow, these people see snow and get excited,” and then I thought, “What am I doing here? I don’t belong here.”
I started to go into supper hermit mode. I couldn’t really talk to anyone, I felt I needed gum, I wondered if my shirt was hanging funny…
Then we (the group of friends I came to see and I) went to the after the after party was happening and… smoked some weed. I’m just gonna say it, we got high and everything got better.
I found myself often standing alone on the dance-floor staring at everybody, at how they interacted with each other and it was mesmerizing. I broke down the desire to go to out into these components:
1. you want to see your friends
2. you want to be seen and feel fabulous
3. you want to party
4. you think that going out all the time will help your career.
If those four things don’t work for you…
wait, I forgot:
number 5. you want to get laid (you know, if you’re single)
I was just zoning out thinking thoughts like these and also, “damn, I’ve got to get home.”
At one point, I was siting there with Trevor and Craig, watching everyone A friend who shall remain un-named was in the corner was playing with his new camera saying, ”Look, I’m the new Craig Wetherby!”
and we were all laughing and Trevor said to me,
“You know tonight was really awkward.”
me – yeah awkward
t – and when we got to the bar it felt really (he pauses)…
me – awkward (I finish the sentence with the obvious).
us (in union)- yeah.
It was a supper stonney moment and of course we went into hysterical laughter when we realized this. I drove home on Sunset listening to the Stones. there was no one else on the street, and i had a moment when I realized, “okay, I’m a Californian now. It feels good.”

Joshua Tree is in California
Sunday. We woke up at 5am and drove out on the 10 that, from the Pacific Ocean, goes all the way to New Orleans

You run across interesting ads like this one for America

Christine’s hair was doing funny things.

But Tinko, Christine and I didn’t drive all the way to New Orleans, we drove to Joshua Tree
…where the clouds are very interesting. I’ve heard about Joshua Tree many times, mostly because of the U2 record, but strangely this week, when I mentioned the place to some angelinos, they had never heard about it…. Christine and I went there a few weeks ago, and camped. But that is another story. This time we went to take some pictures.

the DISCO CHICKEN appeared

We had lunch at the Beatnik Café in Joshua Tree and found this interesting book.

After that we headed off to a crazy overlook called Keys View. Apparently that fog is actually LA smog…

On our way out of the park, we stopped at this crazy view of Twenty Nine Palms, one of the desert cities around the park. One of my favorite filmakers, Bruno Dumont, made a movie called Twenty Nine Palms. Didn’t like it as much as his masterpiece, “L’Humanité“.

Our present on the way back to LA : this crazy sky. I love the desert.
The photos of Christine were taken by Tinko on film cameras, so we’ll have to wait for them to be developed, but you can see his work on his Flickr page, or on his Facebook
