Ace Hotel get away with th Nite Dogs

without comments

We went out to Palm Springs for the Blackdisco / Canyons / DFA / Generic Surplus Party. I ended-up playing a few tunes.

it was funny to drive out to the desert with your family so you could go to a gay, hotel party. We got out of the car and walking into a steamy bath of Bears and boys like Louis who introduced me to his friend Louis. But it worked and everybody welcomed the wacky family that just rolled in. In the true disco tradition, the freaks recognize the freaks and there is love in the unity.

At the end of his set, the gentleman, I think from San Fran with sandy blonde hair played the Loft Classic, “I’ll Always Love my Momma,” in our honor. Very Sweet.

The air was dry and brilliant stars set in at night. It was the Brat Pack that established Palm Springs we’re told, and its weird… one part of you thinks, how could anyone vacation in this heat and your communal consciousness plagues you… how can the grass be this green in the desert!!! but at the same time you get it and you’re right at the base of this crazy mountain and its beautiful.

The thrifting is pretty great too.

jacket

Anywho. It was a great time. Good ol’ family fun time. Thanks to Kevin aka Nite Dog and the Ace Hotel for making it happen.

while I’m pulling favs from other people’s blogs…

I love this whole series from the miss at Moldy Doily. Check it. No one maintains that innocent quality of little girls playing dress up and doing photo shoots like this woman. heart u.

And another incestious re-posting. This one from Kathy, my fav art bloggist:

not sure it has the same impact as it did in context but I still dig it. Okay , back to music now.

I understand now

I want to say something about what I did today, and cleverly tie it into the overall-ness these Vivian Westwood shoes posses (photos from Diane P’s blog), but… how’s this?… These shoes are better than school.

Joshua Tree is in California

without comments

Sunday. We woke up at 5am and drove out on the 10 that, from the Pacific Ocean, goes all the way to New Orleans

You run across interesting ads like this one for America

Christine’s hair was doing funny things.

But Tinko, Christine and I didn’t drive all the way to New Orleans, we drove to Joshua Tree

…where the clouds are very interesting. I’ve heard about Joshua Tree many times, mostly because of the U2 record, but strangely this week, when I mentioned the place to some angelinos, they had never heard about it…. Christine and I went there a few weeks ago, and camped. But that is another story. This time we went to take some pictures.

the DISCO CHICKEN appeared

We had lunch at the Beatnik Café in Joshua Tree and found this interesting book.

After that we headed off to a crazy overlook called Keys View. Apparently that fog is actually LA smog…

On our way out of the park, we stopped at this crazy view of Twenty Nine Palms, one of the desert cities around the park. One of my favorite filmakers, Bruno Dumont, made a movie called Twenty Nine Palms. Didn’t like it as much as his masterpiece, “L’Humanité“.

Our present on the way back to LA : this crazy sky. I love the desert.

The photos of Christine were taken by Tinko on film cameras, so we’ll have to wait for them to be developed, but you can see his work on his Flickr page, or on his Facebook

Retrograde 4Ever

without comments

this stuff happened on October 17th but Mercury was in retrograde and I never got these photos up, you understand.

the lovely mandy b , originally uploaded by ChristineRenee.net.

Mandy and Tommy from Tribeca Grand were in town to help produce the Jeremy Scott show. More of my pics from the show here

I took Harvey, who’d just landed home from Hawaii and was still a little loopy from his normal cocktail of flying sedatives

we both agreed, the tire belt was the best piece in the show

afterwards we went to a bar and smoked cigarettes

then it was off to the BAR where this guy hosed the DISCO CHICKEN down with the spray gun. Chicken thought it was cool. People really get afraid of Chicken sometimes, and this guy was the first person to be so punk rock about it.

Chicken did manage to make a few new friends:

  and see some old ones:

next photo by fellow birdman the arab parrot

photo of the arab parrot alex is seen taking in the above photo

Louisahhh!!! at Turntable Lab LA

for ten days I went down to this spot in LA and took pictures of ten people that I just randomly introduced myself to. Tinko lent me his camera and I can’t say I mastered it, but using it was a throw back to days when I was shooting all the time with my beloved Nikon F2 1973. Then, I read Camera Lucida and it fucked me up. Its really hard for me to invade peoples’ space with a camera now.

Tone At Diamond Supply Co.

homeless woman rocking it

The fact that I was there convincing people to let me photograph them for ten days -and for what I couldn’t really tell them- was a crazy challenge. Who was I? Some people stuck with me. Some people got fed up after 5 or 8 days into it and told me to never come back to their store. One guy fell in love with me and one lady was so awesome I developed a little crush for her, but not really cause she’s so young I felt kind-of pervy instead of turned on when we hung out.

Fall in LA/the ceiling at Canter’s Dinner

In the end, the good was that I got to know a little more about this section of LA that feels a bit like NY or at least a place where everyone just hangs, united by a corner. I made some friends and so rolls it.

there are more photos in the archives but this is all i could show.

Thanks to Van at B2, Carter at SLB, Glen at FlightClub, all the people at Diamond Supply Co. but esp. Tone, Alyx at Elegant Mess and Rich Royal, the ladies at Turntable Lab LA: Louisahhh!!! and Gina, Rick at Reserve, Alex and Tinko + Disco Chicken, fuck it.
