a life to love by

Alex “axes” my Dad for my hand.

It kind of started out as a normal day, except that last night, I asked alex, “So when are you going to do it?”

Of course we were home for Thanksgiving, but also we were home so the folks could meet Alex and he could ask my dad, in the traditional style, for my hand, and the rest of me too.

I was showering in the same shower I’d showered in all through highschool, which is kind of sexy to think about. Don’t you wish we knew how to appreciate ourselves every single day, that there were no akward tenage years? Youth is wasted on the young.

alex’s mom bought him a camera

Alex is looking over the shower door and says, “Don’t worry. I think I’m going to ask him on Wednesday.”

Okay… Good thing I brought it up. “Ummm, babe, I’m throwing a party in LA on Saturday. We have to be back by Thursday which means we need to leave Tuesday so you have to ask him tommorrow,” not that I was forcing things.

So today was the big day. We did little things like buy a camera and get coffee at Quakenbush’s (Amazing how change and stillness exsit together, the old Austin and the new me and the old me and the new Austin). We bought a bottle of New Mexican champange (made by a french family, so it was Kosher) and made our way home.

this guy is still hanging around coffee shops trying to pick up chicks. He hit on me too, TEN YEARS AGO!!! Damn! Quackenbush’s Austin, TX.

So, its after dinner and he still hasn’t asked. If I wore spectacles I’d be peering over them at this point looking at alex… with a, “Did you change your mind, kind of look.”

He said when he gets him alone grab Mom and take her out of the room.

So a little latter, the women were washing dishes and Alex and my Dad were talking about American obisity and how women SHOULD have a little heft to them, and I grabbed mom and we went to her bed room.

I told her what was going on, and we started to cry and hug each other and she said, “It’s a good thing cause if you had let that one go, I would have fought for him.”

CR… the past

a letter to Mizz Mellie Mel:

Alex did ask for my hand,
and dad accepted
mom said she would fight for him,
that he was too good to let go.

It was hard, the past colliding, always
building like the sea and its salt,

but this is right, and fantasy’s are other lives
past or future.

now is present,
and yeah… its on girl,
we are getting married, so yeah!

Gibson, our family dog, named after the guitar maker. Yes, for real, she was named after a guitar.
